Approximately 800 dogs and cats are killed every hour in the United States because there are not enough homes for them.

The Mary Ann Morris Animal Society, Inc. (MAMAS), a South Carolina organization dedicated to procuring the humane treatment of animals, is desperately trying to avoid putting over 50 dogs to sleep.

Their maximum capacity is 40 to 50 dogs. They currently have 125 - and many need to be treated for heartworm, with a price tag that averages at $300 to $400. If MAMAS doesn't get the help they need their doors will be closed, and these pets, many of whom are considered family, will have no place to go.

You may have questions about recent safety announcements for Fisher-Price toys, and I want to personally acknowledge your concerns. Many of us here at Fisher-Price are parents, too – myself included – and we share your belief that nothing is more important than the well-being of our children.

I can reassure you that our business operates in a highly regulated environment, which means that toys are overwhelmingly safe. I’d also like you to know that beyond industry regulations, Fisher-Price takes additional steps to constantly gather and review feedback about how our products are doing in real homes. We analyze this information to see if patterns are developing that could indicate a product performance or other type of issue.

Through this monitoring, we have identified a few issues we want you to know about. In collaboration with the Consumer Products Safety Commission, Health Canada and other regulators, we initiated the recall process for certain products. And we’re reaching out to parents to help you determine whether you have a recalled product and how to get a replacement part or repair kit. Bub is not a “who,” but a word that evolved from “Bubbadah!” an exclamation often spontaneously spouted when one of our family members is unable to contain his or her excitement. (Try it out! It rolls off of your tongue so much nicer than “Bingo,” or “Holy Cow,” or “Oh My Goodness and All the Stars in Heavens to Betsy!”) Bubbadah is actually a word one of my nephews created when he breathlessly attempted to tell us several things all at once. Poor fella! He was about three years old then, and he’s now all grown up. You know how it is with families – some things you just never live down!

Bub’s Toys and Gifts sprouted from Bubbadah’s Buys, an online store I created several years ago that sold discount family fashions, gifts and toys on eBay and Amazon. The store did so well and grew so big that it exploded into two separate stores. In fact, you can still visit Bubbadah’s Buys on eBay and Amazon and find some fabulous deals on designer clothing!

Here at Bub’s Toys and Gifts I have one very stern desideratum that I call the Peter Pan Precept – “Never Grow Up!” In order to sell toys, one must simply be the child. They provide us with an excuse to escape to a movie or play a game together or, my favorite, peacefully settle around a jigsaw puzzle while listening to the pounding drops of a passing thunderstorm.

Leave it to the ingenuity of a dedicated teacher to invent what we now call the "jigsaw puzzle." "For the purpose of teaching geography," John Spilsbury, a teacher in England, created the first jigsaw puzzle in the year 1767. Adhering his maps to flat hardwood, he used a fine saw to cut along the borders of the European countries, and the jigsaw puzzle was born (until the jigsaw was actually invented, however, this was called the "dissected puzzle.") Hand-painted and made of wood, the puzzle was a map of England and Wales, with each county making up a separate piece.

People actually seemed to enjoy this learning tool enough to begin creating jigsaw puzzles for entertainment. The earliest known light-hearted puzzle was a 1785 depiction of John Gilpin's wild ride on a runaway horse from a comedic ballad by William Cowper. None of these were interlocking, of course, until nearly a decade later when power tools were invented.

The first jigsaw puzzle for children, "The Smashed Up Locomotive," was designed by Milton Bradley in 1880. By printing a lithograph of a steam engine locomotive and cutting it into pieces, the "smashed up" effect was achieved when a child opened the box and saw the locomotive all in pieces. Because of his Puritan upbringing, Bradley's nature was to seek order. Therefore, the object of the "The Smashed Up Locomotive" was to make the locomotive whole once again.

And I guess, maybe, that's why so many of us enjoy our "puzzle time" - it allows us a brief respite, one quiet moment to piece together a little jigsaw island of order in the sea of our crazy chaotic lives.

Summer Games - Monster's Ball Bonanza

This is a great game for 4 or more kids to play in a swimming pool! All you need is 3 or more beach balls. (Try to maintain a “3 balls” to “4 kids” ratio for this game. For example: 6 kids = 4 balls, 8 students = 6 balls etc.)

Make sure you have everyone except one child, called "the Monster," go to the same end of the pool. The Monster gets all the beach balls.

The objective is for the kids in the pool to make it to the other end of the pool without getting hit by the balls the Monster is throwing. On “go,” they must swim to the other end of the pool. If they choose to swim underwater, they must surface at least twice. This gives the Monster a fair chance as he/she throws balls at them.

Once the Monster throws all of the balls, he can't get them out of the pool until everyone gets to the other end of the pool. When the Monster hits one of the swimmers with a ball, they must get out of the pool and become a Monster in the next round, and help him/her in the next round. Play until there is only one child left in the pool, and that person is the winner.

Summer Games: Squirt the Tail off the Donkey!

All you need for this wild water game is duct tape, white crepe paper and one water blaster per player

To prepare, use duct tape to attach three 6-inch strips of white crepe paper to the back of each player's shirt.

Give each kid a water blaster, then let the squirting begin!

Whoever has the most remaining paper once the water runs out is the winner!

Based on the classic game, "Baby in the Air." This game is played with a Prime Time Toys Splash Rocket and a Super Soaker X-215; each kid picks a number in the beginning of the game, then the oldest stomps on the Splash Rocket. As it flies in the air, he/she cries "rocket in the air number..." then runs away.

The child whose number is called grabs the rocket and yells "freeze!" (He must have the rocket and Super Soaker in his possession before he yells this.)

Then the child with the rocket takes three steps toward any other child and tries to squirt them with the Super Soaker. If he hits the kid the child gets an "R", if he misses the squirter gets an "R."

When a child gets squirted enough times to spell the word "Rocket" he or she is out and so on until there is one child left as the winner.

Luxury British clothing brand, Aquascutum, will revert back to its roots after its sale to UK fashion entrepreneur, Harold Tillman, by Japanese owned Renown Inc.

Mr. Tillman, who made history as one of the first male students at the London College of Fashion, is best known for his 1990 purchase and transformation of Jaeger, another classic British brand.

Tillman describes his new purchase as being "steeped and steeped in tradition." Aquascutum's history dates back 158 years to producing the first waterproof wool to supply coats for British army officers serving in the Crimean War. Famous customers since then have included the Queen Mother, Baroness Thatcher, Sophia Loren, Humphrey Bogart and Cary Grant.

Mr. Tillman will continue heralding Aquascutum's rich heritage, while also revamping its website and adding a high end accessory line to complement the traditional offering of coats and tailored clothing.
